The Avathara Sthalam
The Avathara Sthalam (birth place) of Sri Sathguru Swamigal is a 200 year old thatched house. This house has been the home for seven generations of his lineage, since 1777, till 2017. The seventh generation of Sri Sathguru Swamigal were the last occupants of the birth place. The couple, namely, Sri T. V. Venkatasubramanian and Smt. V. Lakshmi, jointly decided on the need to preserve this heritage site. Instead of monetizing it and leading a luxurious life, they decided to spend their lifetime preserving the house and its surroundings.
Extreme care was taken by them and their forefathers in preserving the sanctity of the place. Wherever required, minimal alterations were done, only those that were absolutely necessary. Thus, the basic structure of the house, along with its main 2-Feet supporting mud-walls, the clay flooring and other aesthetics were preserved for generations. The room where Sathguru Swamigal was born, was under special care with bare minimal usage.
Further, several of Swamigal's personal belongings were under safe-keeping for generations. As they realized the value of these items, they even resisted mentioning them in casual conversations, fearing safety of those articles.
These articles include:
- The actual Pathugai of Sathguru Swamigal
- The actual Unchavruthi Vessel used by Swamigal
- The actual Jalra used by Swamigal
- The Unjal, upon which Lord Sri Ram had kept the Sradha Dakshina.
- The Vigraha of Lord Hanuman, which Swamigal did prathistai and worshiped
Along with these artifacts, the avathara sthalam is host to the place where Sathguru Swamigal used to sit and meditate and chant Rama Nama. Also present is the place where Swamigal and his subsequent generations kept and worshiped Lord Ram and other deities.
Immense care was taken during renovation in further preserving these spots. The floor on which several hundreds of Bhagavathas would have sung several thousand bhajans, was never altered. Swamigal's Birth room, till today is still sanitized in Cow dung.
The whole house has been renovated with the sole aim of highlighting the pious life led by Sri Sathguru Swamigal. His life history has been depicted in 18 colorful murals. You can also see Lord Rama with Seetha in Pattabisheka kolam and Lord Krishna with Radha along with Ashta Sakhi.
In addition to these, traditional household artifacts, which have been in use by the generations who lived in the house, have also been preserved.
It is pure bliss to experience this wonderful heritage site in all its glory in person and enjoy the serene and calm surroundings which bring you closer to divinity. Come, experience, cherish and rejoice the positive vibes for yourself.
